Land Rules by Chris and Lyn.

Permaculture Design and Small Woodlands Course. 21/6/97

(This is a variation of our Land Rules, "tweaked" for this visit, to minimise the impact of a large number of people).

Welcome to "Tir Penrhos Isaf " (a loose translation of which is- "the lower land at the head of the wet moor"), we hope you enjoy your visit.

We want our home to be an example of how a site can be visited without damaging it. Please help us to achieve this by following the rules set out below.

1. If in doubt about anything please ask.

2. Please let us know if you see anything which you think needs immediate attention (eg. an animal in distress), rather than trying to intervene yourself.

3. Usually we say, "feel free to look around using obvious paths. If you can't see a path, please don't go there as something sensitive may be going on that you are not aware of". But as there is a large number of people here today, we ask that you only look around from the paths specified by Chris. This is a very sensitive time of year and you may be unaware of damage you might cause if you go elsewhere.

4. Please don't pick anything without permission.

5. If you were to come on one of our small-group weekend courses you would find that there are beautiful and interesting areas for you to walk through (on obvious paths!), without entering fields which may contain livestock or may be resting. On these courses we would be happy to show you around the pastures to explain their content and management and to answer any queries you may have.

6. Also on these small group courses we would be happy to take you to visit the livestock. But please do not do this without us. This is for your safety and theirs. Please do not feed any animals at any time with anything.

7. The main gate is the only entry and exit to and from the land. Please do not climb over or through any fences. Please leave gates open or closed as you find them (see rule (1)). The white tape is electrified! Please do not attempt to touch the horses over this tape for obvious reasons.

Further points:

The land surrounding us is owned by the Forestry Commission who have an open access policy, so feel free to explore the woods. Please remember to only use the main gate as entry/exit point to and from our site. This is a very important point which has been disregarded by some causing damage and distress.

The main stream has a very high copper content (1000 p.p.m. plus in the silt), so we would advise you not to drink it. Safe spring water is available from taps by the barn, in the bathroom and in the house.

Thank you for taking the time to read through this and for your co-operation. It is hard to compile a list of land rules without including negatives, eg "don't do this and that". We would like to emphasise that we feel very positive about our visitors. Most are very understanding and responsible people and many return to attend other courses and become good friends.
