Background

The Mawddach Permaculture Group was formed in 1992 after the Permaculture Intensive design Course, Dolgellau 1991, for the purpose of investigating and developing ideas and strategies for sustainable practices in our own locality.

For much of the nineties the Mawddach Permaculture Group operated as a core group of six people whose fields of expertise and experience include the areas of

The policies and practices of the group are firmly based upon the permaculture ethics and principles which promote organic, environmentally sensitive communities working in both sustainable and profitable ways within their local landscapes.

Meetings are irregular, being project related.

Projects

The group has been involved in a number of projects, some of which are given below. During the early nineties, the group evolved more effective and fun ways of running meetings; this pattern was written up and presented in Permaculture Magazine.

Rio report

This is a report produced as a result of the Rio Summit (1991 date?). The report was sent to (who?) and the mawddach Permaculture Group was recognised as a (what? contributor?) by (someone?).

This report is notable in that it was a collaborative effort sustained over several months. Its production was greatly helped by the use of appropriate meeting patterns (see below) and the design of a pro forma. A pro forma provides a structure to each page (headings etc.) and allows information to be collated and presented in a standard format.

A similar strategy was used for the Tree Cycle description, below, and also for the Permaculture Association's work on the British Teachers' Manual.

The Tree Cycle

The Tree Cycle is a design framework for the creation of mixed forest systems which are economically, environmentally and socially productive and beneficial. It allows for evolution and development and provides large numbers of niches for community involvement.

The complexity of the management of diverse forest systems make them ideal community / eco village projects which themselves have diverse needs. This design is one of the most complete strategies which we yet have for developing sustainability in rural Britain.

Latest developments (2001) have been the formation of the Rhiw Goch Saw MIll Cooperative and the application for grants to establish this component of the Tree Cycle; watch this space.

Shredder and Community Composting

A component of the Tree Cycle. The group developed a pilot shredding/composting project in partnership with the local council who supplied a machine. This provided valuable experience and lessons. The project was discontinued when we were unable to find a permanent site. Current work with the Tree Cycle is aiming to re-introduce the composting scheme.
