Principle Objective:
To encourage a holistic understanding of water management.
Learning outcomes that are useful to aim for:
- By the end of this session students will be able to:
- Explain water management in a holistic way rather than fragmentary.
- Recognise water as essential to life and life processes.
- Recognise that primary water storage takes place in the soil and therefore attention needs to be given to the soil.
- Identify strategies for reducing run-off.
- Identify strategies for increasing absorption.
Principle Objective:
To foster a basic understanding that natural regeneration processes can be understood and worked with.
Learning outcomes that are useful to aim for:
By the end of this session students will be able to:
- Explain that land is dynamic not static.
- Clearly understand and explain the principle "work with nature not against it".
- Recognise that the general pattern of natural regeneration in Britain is towards forest.
- Identify the three main factors in sustainable systems (water, soil, diversity).
- Understand and explain the concept of steering.
Principle Objective:
To encourage non-judgmental observation as the pre-requisite for good design work.
Learning outcomes that are useful to aim for:
By the end of this session students will be able to:
- Understand the importance of good observation in design work.
- Identify and remove assumptions from observations.
- Distinguish between random observations and thematic observations.
- Understand the cyclic process of observation- speculation- hypothesis- experiment- further observation.
Principle Objective:
To generate thinking which is inclusive (holistic) rather than fragmentary through the use of a simple framework that recognises interpenetration and complexity.
Learning outcomes that are useful to aim for:
By the end of this session students will be able to:
- Explain the ethics in terms of a pattern towards holistic thinking.
- Identify each ethic with simple examples.
- Demonstrate the interpenetration of ethics.
- Understand the use of the ethics as a guide to design work.
Principle Objective:
To recognise the importance of patterning as a tool in community understanding and design.
Learning outcomes that are useful to aim for:
By the end of this session students will be able to:
- Explain that community exists in the minds and activities of its members.
- Recognise similarities between patterning in environments and communities.
- Identify traditional connections within a community.
- Generate further events/activities which draw members of a community together.
Principle Objective:
Develop basic counselling skills.
Learning outcomes that are useful to aim for:
By the end of this session students will be able to:
- Understand and explain the concept of support.
- Recognise the importance of developing good listening skills.
- Recognise the importance of developing good thinking skills and modes of expression
