The Rio
Report: Mawddach Permaculture Group
6. Employment
- There are many opportunities
for employment in this area using local resources in a sustainable way.
- But in fact, at present there
is high and increasing unemployment. The tendency for exporting raw products
and importing manufactured goods, processed food and even timber has severely
reduced job opportunities in local-based industries.
- Solutions. Generate satisfying,
fulfilling work that creates a better world.
- A saw-mill feeds interconnected
local industries, supplying for example building materials, farm needs
(such as fence posts, gates), furniture, paper, waste for bio-fuels and
mulch.
- locally produced renewable
energy creates employment through the installation, operation and servicing
of wind and water power plants and management of fuel forests etc.
- Better management of local
resources at the community level by processing locally produced raw materials,
providing employment for the community. For example, local furniture making
or food processing such as organic yoghurt.
- More people employed on the
land in mixed farming, forestry and aquacultures.
- Management of tourism without
harm to the environment such as guided walks, environment awareness training
and local tourist transport systems.
